Family-Friendly Beaches Near Wilmington, NC

Amusement parks ferris wheel

A good family beach day needs a lifeguard stand nearby, a bathroom within reach and a backup plan for when a toddler melts down at 2 p.m. The beaches around Wilmington cover all of that, but they suit different families in different ways.

Lifeguards: when and where

The big three beaches staff lifeguard stands from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day weekend:

  • Wrightsville Beach: 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
  • Carolina Beach: 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday to Thursday, 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Friday to Sunday, covering about 3 miles of beach
  • Kure Beach: 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily, from 10 towers along 3 miles of beach

Late in the season, Kure Beach may leave some towers empty and mark them with a black flag. Outside the season, the stands are empty. Set up near a staffed stand, and check the flags when you arrive.

Carolina Beach: rides, doughnuts, fireworks

This is the easiest pick for families with kids of mixed ages, because the beach and the entertainment are in the same place.

  • Boardwalk rides run all summer, including a carousel and a Ferris wheel, plus carnival games and street food.
  • Fireworks by the Sea and Boardwalk Blast is free and weekly in summer: live music starts at 6:30 p.m. and fireworks go off at 9 p.m.
  • Britt's Donuts, open since 1939, is on the boardwalk. It's seasonal, so plan on summer.
  • The boardwalk arcade is the move when the kids are sunburned or bored.
  • Carolina Beach State Park has free day use, 9 miles of trails and wild Venus flytraps, which tend to impress kids more than any ride.

Glass and alcohol are banned on the beach, and any gear left out overnight gets removed as abandoned property.

Kure Beach: calmer, with a pier and a fort

Kure Beach is next door but quieter, which makes it easier to keep an eye on little ones.

  • The Kure Beach Pier dates to 1923 and is the oldest fishing pier on the Atlantic coast. Older kids can fish, and everyone else can watch.
  • Fort Fisher State Historic Site is a few minutes south. Admission is free, and it's open Tuesday through Saturday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. The earthwork fort and the 2024 visitor center work well for school-age kids. Try the Fort Fisher history walk.
  • Fort Fisher State Recreation Area has free day use and a designated swim beach.

Wrightsville Beach: for kids who want to do something

Wrightsville suits older kids and teens who'd rather learn to surf than sit under an umbrella.

  • WB Surf Camp has run lessons and day camps for more than 25 years, for kids 6 and up as well as adults, with no more than 3 students per instructor.
  • Crystal South Surf Camp, founded in 1996, is the oldest surf camp in Wrightsville Beach and offers private and group lessons.
  • The Loop is a paved 2.45-mile route that's good for a family walk or scooter ride.
  • Stand-up paddling and calm-water lessons on the sound side.

One heads-up: from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day weekend, surfing isn't allowed in the flagged zones in front of lifeguard stands.

Bald Head Island: the adventure day

For a full-day trip, take the 20-minute passenger ferry from Deep Point Marina in Southport. Nobody drives on Bald Head, so kids get golf carts and bikes. Climb Old Baldy, North Carolina's oldest standing lighthouse (1817), then walk the maritime forest loop.

Rainy-day backup

The Fort Fisher aquarium is closed. The North Carolina Aquarium at Fort Fisher shut on May 26, 2026 for a multi-year renovation. In the meantime, the aquarium runs Discovery Bay at Independence Mall in Wilmington (JCPenney wing): free, with seahorses, frogs, fish and carnivorous plants. It's open Monday to Saturday 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Sunday noon to 6 p.m.

Other free indoor options: the Fort Fisher State Historic Site visitor center and, up on Topsail Island, the Missiles and More Museum.

Beach-day kit that actually helps

  • Shade (a tent or umbrella) and more water than seems reasonable
  • A wagon or beach cart, since some access walks are long
  • Water shoes for shells, and sandals for hot sand
  • A bag for wet clothes and a jug of water to rinse sandy feet
  • Pack everything up at sunset. Carolina Beach removes gear left out overnight
